The 7 Most Important Relationship Lessons

#2

We’re approaching the end of Amy’s Story.

So it makes sense now to jump all the way forward…

To a scene from the end of Amy’s relationship with Carter.

The breakup.

Well…

Let’s just say Amy will do something that’ll surprise you…

Amy’s Story

Lesson 2

In 8 minutes, Carter will walk out on Amy.

For good.

But right now…

He’s late.

Amy fidgets as she sits in a cafe.

She checks the time…

Can’t read it…

Her eyes are too blurry.

Where the hell are you, Carter?

She grabs her steaming hot chocolate…

Tries to sip it…

Spills some on her skirt.

Please, Carter. Hurry!

Amy doesn’t notice the burning liquid seeping in…

Leaving a dark stain on her fabric…

A burn scar on her skin.

She tries to take a deep breath…

But holds it instead.

Come on, Amy. Don’t lose it…

The last time she was so nervous was when—

She doesn’t remember.

She can’t think anymore.

As Amy stares at the entrance door, she feels so…

Dizzy…

So HEAVY

So…

light…

She’s floating towards the door…

Her body adrift with her mind—

The door opens.

Carter walks in.

Amy holds her breath.

Or was she holding it this whole time?

She slowly closes her eyes.

A flash…

Of memory.

Of lightning.

Caramel eyes light up.

She’s lying in bed with Carter.

It’s the year they met.

Amy smiles.

She was never afraid of lightning.

Even as a kid, it comforted her.

And excited her.

She looks at the love of her life. “That’s how you make me feel, Carter.”

Amy slowly opens her eyes.

She’s back in the present…

Back in the cafe…

Waiting for Carter…

No.

He’s already here.

Sitting opposite her.

“What’s up, Amy?”

She finally exhales…

Forgets to inhale.

“Carter, I—I—“

“I have to meet a friend in 15 minutes. You need to speed it up.”

“Ok, Carter. No problem. Listen…I—I—“

Amy stares deeply into his caramel eyes…

She deeply wants to look away…

But she’s drifting towards them—

It’s not too late to change her mind.

How can she even think to abandon Carter?

Abandon Carter.

Just thinking those words made her feel like a traitor worthy of the death penalty.

“Carter, I’m ending it…”

“Ending what?”

“This. Us.”

Carter chuckles. “I don’t have time for this nonsense. Gotta go.”

He stands up.

Looks back.

“I’ll see you at home.”

“You’re not, Carter…you’re…not coming home…to my apartment…”

He stares at her…

The craters inside his caramel eyes pulsate…

Preparing for eruption…

Amy gulps. “I changed the locks, sweetie. It’s—it’s over. I’m SO sorry.”

He sits back down. His right fist is clenched.

“Keep talking like this and I’ll hit you so hard…”

“So hit me! HIT ME, Carter! Don’t you see? I’m broken! You broke me! So hit me!”

She’s more stunned than Carter.

First time she talked back to him.

“It’s all you do, Carter! Hitting me! Hurting me! Why do you think I’m breaking up with you here?” She spreads her arms out to indicate the crowd. “Because I don’t want a broken nose!”

To make the point, Amy cups her hands over her nose.

Or so she thinks.

Her hands are cupped over her heart.

“I love you so much and I’ll always love you and I hate that I’ll always love you and more than anything — I HATE what you’ve become!”

Amy looks into Carter’s deep volcanic eyes…

She feels she’s on the edge…

Inches from falling in…

But for once, she isn’t going to look down.

She will NOT back down.

Their eyes burn into each other…

Carter squints…

His eyes begin to erupt…

But they don’t.

He looks away.

His fists unclench.

Amy doesn’t notice.

Her eyes are still locked into his.

“Carter, listen to me . You hit hard, you know that? I think you do. But I don’t think you’ll ever understand how hard — how much harder — it is seeing the pain in your eyes. Watching you destroy your life. How hard it is failing to help you…”

It’s at this moment that Amy realizes she’s been sobbing.

She doesn’t realize that everyone in the cafe is watching them…

Trying to listen…

But her voice is too muffled.

It’s even hard for Carter to understand her.

“Carter…you’ll never ever understand how hard it is to leave you…to abandon you. Even now — when I want to run as far away as possible from you and never look back — I want to just squeeze you and never let go…”

Amy laughs as she cries…

“Love really is crazy, sweetie…”

She felt crazy for years.

Broken, too.

And now she’s breaking down crazily into tears she didn’t know she still had.

Had you told Amy as a child that her first love would be a cat…

That her second love would be her job…

And that she would end up abandoning both for her third love…

A man…

She’d smile at you and say, “You’re crazy!”

“Maybe I’m crazy for leaving you, Carter…maybe I’m evil for abandoning you…but please don’t forget — I need to do this. For me. Otherwise I won’t be me. I won’t be the Amy you knew. The Amy I think you loved once upon a time…”

Amy could swear her tears are running down her dry throat…

She’s choking on them with every word…

“Am I abandoning you? Or am I just leaving you? I don’t know. But I do know that if I stay with you — knowing I’m no longer me — I’ll be deceiving you. Betraying you…”

Emotionless caramel eyes are looking at her.

“And I’ll be betraying myself, Carter. Because I deserve better. Yes, I said it…I deserve better! I have so much to give to myself…to give to the world, and being with you just takes it all away!”

Carter doesn’t say anything.

For a moment, Amy doesn’t feel anything.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Not even sadness.

She looks down at her hands…

They are wet…

Trembling harder than ever…

“So please, Carter, forgive me. I forgive you for everything you’ve done to me. I’ll just need time to forgive you for everything you’ve done to yourself…”

Carter grunts.

Stands up.

Turns to leave.

“Carter, you know something?”

He stops to listen.

“I’ll always see your caramel eyes. They’ll forever flash in my mind. Like lightning, sweetie. Did I ever tell you how much I love lightning?”

She can’t see his eyes.

Carter is not looking at her.

He’s facing the door.

“But you know, sweetie, the thing with lightning is…it blinds you. It burns you. Leaves a scar. It can completely destroy you. Wanna know how I know?”

That’s when Carter walks out…

For good.

“I know because—”

The door slams.

Amy flinches.

“Because…I’ve been struck by one.”

The last words Amy would say to Carter.

And he wasn’t there to hear it.

She stares at the door…

Still shaking from the slam…

Unaware that everyone is staring at her.

The door doesn’t open.

Carter is gone.

She feels so…

Dizzy…

So HEAVY

So…

light…

Why does she feel like she’s drowning in her own head?

Amy is drowning…

The roar of water splits her ears…

She starts floating towards the door…

Spinning helplessly…

Crashing every which way…

In the turbulent river of her mind…

Towards Carter…

Forever and ever—

Amy wakes up.

Carter storms into the bedroom. “What’s with all the noise?! You’re louder than the storm.”

The only noise she hears is her heart spinning.

Pounding. Not spinning.

She can’t hear the ear-splitting thunder.

Or crashing rain.

She’s sweating so much, her nightgown is stuck to her skin.

“Sorry, sweetie. I—I had a nightmare.”

Amy checks the time…

Can’t read it…

Her eyes are too blurry.

“Nightmare about what?”

“Not sure. Forgot. But it was bad…”

“All nightmares are bad.” Carter’s caramel eyes are emotionless.

“Come lay next to me please. It’s strange, sweetie…I miss you…like I haven’t seen you in forever…want to just squeeze you…”

Carter comes and holds her.

Kisses her.

Touches her.

Amy stops him.

“I can’t, Carter.”

“Why the hell not?”

“I forgot to take—”

“Everything’ll be fine…”

Even after all these years…

After all that’s happened…

Amy nods.

“Carter, I trust you.”

Carter is right. As always.

Anything to make Carter happy.

She kisses him…

Touches him…

A flash of lightning.

Caramel eyes light up.

On this night, Amy becomes pregnant.

In 8 months, Carter will walk out on her…

For good.

For Natalia.

Final Important Thoughts

Don’t remember Natalia?

There’ll be a hint in the PS section.

So…

Can you guess what Lesson 2 is?

Ready for it?

You Can Breakup with Someone You Love. You Just Need to Love Yourself Enough.

Remember when I said Amy will do something that’ll surprise you?

You might have thought at first that this surprising action was breaking up with Carter.

But, of course, that was just a “nightmare”.

Too bad it wasn’t a dream…

Or even better — real.

Amy’s real surprising action was still trusting Carter after all the hell he put her through…

An action that’d lead her to the real nightmare of getting abandoned 8 months after getting pregnant.

What if…

Instead…

Amy loved herself enough to NOT give in to Carter’s demand?

What if…

She actually did break up with Carter?

These hypothetical questions get into “playing God” territory.

What is certain is that many women assume…

If I break up with my partner, it means I don’t love him/her.

The danger with that thought is it traps you into this thought…

If I love my partner, I cannot break up with him/her.

This is a dangerous trap.

It’s a trap Amy fell into…

Maybe you fell into that trap, too.

This is the correct thought…

Although I love my partner, I love myself AND my partner enough to let go of a relationship not serving me.

Read that again.

Remember it.

The red flag here is if you don’t feel like yourself in the relationship anymore…

But you feel that leaving your partner is abandonment

Or betrayal.

You might ask…

But won’t I hurt my partner if I leave?

Maybe.

Pain in life is inevitable.

It leads to growth.

Maybe by not breaking up with your partner, you’ll deny him or her necessary growth.

Again, we’re in “playing God” territory.

This is certain…

If your partner is staying with you for you — but staying with your partner compromises who you are — then you should walk away…

Or pain will be inevitable, anyway.

In this case, you’re an innocent fraud.

And if your partner is NOT staying with you for you, then you should run — not walk — away.

In this case, your partner is a guilty fraud.

If the idea of “serving me” sounds selfish to you…

Remember this…

Self-service is NOT the same as selfishness.

Maybe this point is more powerful than you think.

Maybe the Lesson 1 episode will have more to say about it.

1 thing is certain…

Lesson 1 is the most powerful lesson of all.

In the next episode…

The final lesson…

Amy will make a decision that will completely change her life.

And after reading it, maybe you will too…

Stay Tuned!
